To find out how to move summer meals beyond Bud and barbecue, we checked in with beer-pairing expert Eric Wallace, 46, president of Longmont, Colo., craft brewer Left Hand Brewing Co.

Complement nutty-flavored cheeses, such as asiago; pale ales are good with hard cheeses, such as Parmesan; wheat beers balance goat and feta cheeses; and blue cheeses go with barley wine.

"That has a lot of malt, but malt is big enough to stand up to a fatty cheese," Wallace says.
