MCI-Sprint, worth more than double SBC-Ameritech deal, to take No. 1 spot

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - MCI Worldcom's $129 billion purchase of Sprint, announced Tuesday, is by far the most expensive corporate acquisition to date. But it is just one in a string of transcontinental telecom takeovers in the past three years.
     According to information compiled by Thomson Financial Securities Data, the 10 biggest takeovers, excluding the MCI-Sprint deal, are:
     1. SBC Communications buys Ameritech Corp.
Price: $62.6 billion

     2. AT&T acquires MediaOne
Price: $60.5 billion
Date: April 1999
     3. Vodafone Group purchases AirTouch
Price: $60.3 billion
Date: January 1999
     4. AT&T wins Tele-Communications Inc.

     5. Bell Atlantic buys GTE Corp.
Price: $53.4 billion
Date: July 1998
     6. Qwest Communications acquires US West
Price: $48.5 billion
Date: June 1999
     7. Worldcom nabs MCI
Price: $41.9 billion
Date: October 1997
     8. Olivetti purchases Telecom Italia
Price: $34.8 billion
Date: February 1999
     9. Bell Atlantic snags NYNEX Corp.
Price: $21.3 billion
Date: April 1996
     10. SBC Communications buys Pacific Telesis
Price: $16.5 billion
