NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing first-time claims for state unemployment benefits was 299,000 for the week ended Sept. 25, up from a revised 274,000 the week before.
Economists surveyed by Reuters had anticipated 297,000 initial claims. The report marks the tenth straight week in which the filings were below the key 300,000 level, indicating that the nation's employment remains strong.
The department said Hurricane Floyd had a "great impact" in the low prior week figure.
The four-week moving average, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, rose to 288,250 from a revised 286,000 the prior week.
Continued claims were 2,188,000 for the week ended Sept.18, the latest data available, up from a revised 2,161,000 a week earlier.Back to top
